Small Business Org Chart Template

In most small businesses the owner is the org chart: every approval, customer complaint and staffing question lands on one desk. That works until it doesn't, and the first sign is usually an owner who cannot take a week off.

About this small business structure

This template introduces one layer - a general manager and department leads - so day-to-day decisions have a home that isn't the owner. It fits service businesses, distributors, clinics and trading companies with roughly 10 to 30 people.

Key roles explained

Owner & Managing Director
Sets targets, handles key accounts and banking relationships, and approves major spending.
General Manager
Runs the business day to day so department leads have one person to escalate to instead of the owner.
Sales Manager
Owns the sales target, the pipeline and the sales team's weekly routine.
Accountant
Manages billing, payables, GST or tax filings and monthly reporting to the owner.
Receptionist
First point of contact for visitors and calls; keeps the front office organised.

Small Business org chart FAQs

What is the best org structure for a small business?

A simple functional structure - owner, one general manager or operations lead, then departments such as sales, operations and accounts - works for most businesses under 50 people.

Do I need a general manager?

You need someone other than the owner who can make day-to-day decisions. In smaller teams that person may be called operations manager or office manager instead.

Can one person appear in two departments?

Put them in the department where they spend most of their time and mention the second responsibility in their job role, for example “Accountant & HR”.
